The best treatments and medicines for motion sickness on a cruise
Cruises are supposed to be fun. And at first they may seem fine, but lemme tell ya, at some point you may start to feel like the giant hotel floating in the middle of the ocean is moving, and it makes you feel just plain awful. Let’s talk about the best ways to avoid and treat motion sickness on a cruise.
1. Wristbands and Acupressure:
One popular and drug-free solution for motion sickness is acupressure wristbands. These bands apply pressure to specific points on the wrist, known as the P6 or Nei-Kuan points, which can help alleviate nausea. You see people wearing these, they didn’t seem to make a difference for me, but some people swear by them.
2. Over-the-Counter Medications:
Many over-the-counter medications are designed specifically for motion sickness. Antihistamines like Dramamine or Bonine can be effective in preventing or alleviating symptoms. It's advisable to take these medications before the cruise or at the onset of symptoms. The only problem for me is these literally make my stomach ache.
3. Prescription Medications:
For those of you who experience severe motion sickness, prescription medications such as scopolamine patches or meclizine may be recommended by a doctor. If you’re worried ask for a presciption ahead of time. These medications are often more potent and longer-lasting than over-the-counter options.
4. Natural Remedies:
Some individuals prefer natural remedies. I am one of these people Ginger, in various forms such as tea, supplements, or candies, has shown effectiveness in reducing nausea. This stuff works amazing. Peppermint and aromatherapy using essential oils like lavender or mint can also provide relief.
5. Choose the Right Cabin Location:
Selecting a cabin in the ship's center, where movement is minimized, can help reduce the impact of motion sickness. Lower decks and cabins closer to the ship's midsection tend to experience less movement.
6. Stay Hydrated and Avoid Heavy Meals:
Dehydration and a full stomach can exacerbate motion sickness. Stay hydrated with water and opt for light, easily digestible meals.
7. Focus on the Horizon:
Encouraging your eyes to focus on the horizon rather than the moving surroundings can help re-sync your visual and vestibular senses.
8. Stay Active:
Engaging in activities on the ship can distract your mind from the motion. Participate in onboard activities, explore the ship, and keep yourself occupied.
Motion sickness doesn't have to cast a shadow over your cruise experience. I think it’s probably worth it to try all of these if you’re one to be as prepared as possible. Bon voyage!
